From directly beneath the arch, you are standing inside a towering natural amphitheater of overhanging limestone. However, you cannot photograph the iconic circular “moon” shape while standing inside it!
The classic postcard view of Moon Hill floating above lush green pomelo orchards is best captured from the rooftop terraces of Licun Village (历村) directly across the road. Experienced travelers do both: hike the 800 steps for the workout and canyon panorama, then reward themselves with fresh Beer Fish on a Licun village rooftop!
1. Geological Anatomy: The Shifting Lunar Phases
Rising 380 meters above sea level, Moon Hill is a remnant of a prehistoric karst cavern whose surrounding outer walls collapsed, leaving only a monumental 50-meter-wide natural limestone arch piercing through the summit.
As you cycle along the Ten-Mile Gallery road approaching from Gaotian:
- Angle 1 (North approach): The arch appears as a slim crescent moon (新月).
- Angle 2 (Directly opposite Licun): The arch opens into a symmetrical half moon (半月).
- Angle 3 (South highway bend): The opening transforms into a glorious full harvest moon (满月).
2. Hiking the Trail: What to Expect
The hike begins just past the rustic ticket gate and winds through a dense bamboo and pine forest.
| Trail Segment | Specifications | Practical Advice |
|---|---|---|
| Lower Forest Path | Approx. 300 steps · 10 mins | Shaded, paved stone staircase flanked by tall weeping bamboo and wild orange trees |
| Upper Ascent | Approx. 500 steps · 15–20 mins | Steeper incline, rustic limestone blocks, resting pavilions with valley viewpoints |
| Under the Moon Arch (月宫) | Flat concrete plateau | Breezy limestone dome; examine permanent titanium climbing bolts overhead |
- Physical Demand: Moderate. Total ascent is approximately 800 steps (~25–35 minutes up, 20 minutes down).
- Fauna Notice: Occasional wild macaques inhabit the upper ridge. Do not dangle open plastic bags or snacks in your hands.
3. The Birthplace of Chinese Sport Climbing
In 1990, legendary American climber Todd Skinner established the first modern sport climbing route on Moon Hill, naming the ferocious roof crack “Over the Moon” (5.12b).
This landmark ascent transformed Yangshuo into Asia’s premier rock climbing capital. Climbers from across the globe gathered to project its immense overhanging stalactites. While climbing directly on the main central arch is now restricted by the Forestry Bureau for geological conservation, surrounding crags in Gaotian and Jinji Cave host dozens of active international routes.
4. Ten-Mile Gallery Access & Vehicle Restrictions
Moon Hill marks the southern boundary of Yangshuo’s famous Ten-Mile Gallery (十里画廊) scenic corridor.
- Vehicle Restrictions (High Season): Between 08:00 and 18:00 during peak holidays, private unlicensed cars without park permits may face checkpoint diversions along the central stretch.
- Licensed Private Fleet Exemption: Vetted tourist charter vehicles with commercial tourism permits can access private drop-off zones smoothly.
- Cycling Route: Renting an e-bike in Yangshuo town (approx. ¥40–¥60 RMB/day) and riding south through Jima, Chaoyang, and along the Yulong River to Moon Hill remains one of the most delightful half-day itineraries in South China.
