Many travelers mistakenly book motorized PVC rafts in Xingping expecting a peaceful bamboo glide. The Li River rafts are motorized, noisy, hold 4 passengers, and emit diesel exhaust on a wide river channel.
The Yulong River (遇龙河) is strictly non-motorized. It is known as the “Little Li River” and is designated as a protected national ecological zone. Every slender raft is poled entirely by hand by a licensed local boatman using a long bamboo spar. It is whisper-quiet, romantic, and takes you deep into countryside karst reflection pools.
1. The Dock-by-Dock Decision Matrix (各码头对比)
The Yulong River flows across 43 kilometers and is split into several strictly segregated commercial sectors. Choosing the wrong dock can mean waiting 2 hours in a tour-group parking lot for a mediocre 30-minute flat paddle.
| Dock Route (Start ➔ End) | Length & Time | Weir Drops (冲坝) | Crowd Level | Xiaohongshu Verdict & Recommendation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jinlong Bridge ➔ Jiuxian (金龙桥至旧县 · 上半程) | ~6.0 km ~90 minutes | 9 Weir Drops (Most Exciting) | Low to Moderate (Morning slots) | 🏆 The Gold Standard (Top Pick). Passes under 500-year-old Fuli Bridge, features crystalline water, lush bamboo tunnels, and thrilling dam drops. |
| Jima ➔ Comprehensive Dock (骥马至水底综合码头 · 中段) | ~4.5 km ~60 minutes | 4 Weir Drops | High (Tour Bus Magnet) | Decent scenery, but heavily targeted by domestic package tour buses between 10:00 and 14:00. Long boarding lines. |
| Shuidi ➔ Gongnong Bridge (水底至工农桥 · 下段) | ~3.2 km ~45 minutes | 2 Weir Drops | Very High (Congested) | Closer to Ten-Mile Gallery. Water is slower and cloudier; river channel is often bumper-to-bumper with rafts during holidays. |
| Wanjing Dock (万景码头) (Round-trip local paddle) | ~1.5 km ~30 minutes | 0 Drops | Extreme | Avoid. A short flat turnaround designed for massive tour groups. Zero rural romance. |
2. Capacity Regulations & Safety Rules
- Strict 2-Passenger Limit: Every raft is legally licensed for strictly two adult passengers. If you are a solo traveler, you must still purchase the entire two-seat ticket.
- Child & Senior Age Restrictions: Due to local maritime safety regulations regarding weir drops, children under 1.0 meter (approx. 3 years old) and seniors over 70 years of age are prohibited from boarding the upper river routes (Jinlong Bridge). They can only take the flatter lower river sections.
- Mandatory Life Vests: You must wear the provided orange life jacket throughout the entire journey. Maritime drones patrol the waterway, and boatmen will be fined if passengers unbuckle vests for photos.
3. The Unfiltered Truth About Boatman Tipping (船工小费潜规则)
One of the most discussed cultural topics on Xiaohongshu and traveler forums is the tipping dynamic on Yulong River:
Officially, your ticket covers all costs and tipping is not required by scenic park rules. However, the boatmen are local rural farmers who perform intense physical labor in 30°C+ summer heat or crisp winter breezes, earning only a modest fixed percentage of each ticket.
- The Baseline Ride: Without a tip, the boatman will pole at standard speed, focus straight ahead, avoid conversation, and navigate the fastest route to finish within 70 minutes.
- The VIP Experience: If you greet your boatman warmly with a smile and offer a modest tip (¥20 to ¥50 RMB per raft, via cash or by scanning their personal WeChat Pay QR code), their posture transforms immediately. They will gently pause the raft beneath ancient stone bridges, teach you how to hold the bamboo pole, position the raft at perfect angles for your photos, and point out wild mandarin ducks and water buffaloes.
4. Weir Drops & Water Protection (How to Avoid Soaked Shoes)
Between Jinlong Bridge and Jiuxian, your bamboo raft will slide down 9 concrete irrigation weirs (冲坝). When the raft’s nose drops 1 to 1.5 meters into the lower river basin, river water rushes up through the front slats!
What to Do:
- Lift Your Feet: Place your heels up on the raised steel crossbar in front of your seat as the boatman approaches the weir drop crest.
- Skip Street Vendor Shoe Bags: Aggressive vendors at the staging dock sell flimsy ¥10 plastic shoe covers. Do not buy them. They puncture within 30 seconds on the rough bamboo ties.
- Wear Real Water Shoes: Wear strap-on sandals (Chacos, Tevas, or Crocs) or take off your socks and shoes entirely to enjoy the cool river water.
- Phone Lanyard Mandatory: Hold your smartphone tightly or wear a secure neck lanyard. The Yulong River has thick limestone silt on the bed; if an iPhone drops overboard, it is virtually impossible to retrieve.
5. Seamless Post-Rafting Cycle: Jiuxian to Yangshuo
The Jinlong Bridge ➔ Jiuxian route ends at Jiuxian Dock (旧县码头). From here, do not take an expensive tourist shuttle back.
Instead, arrange with your driver to meet you at Jiuxian parking lot, or rent a cruiser bicycle / e-scooter right at the dock. Jiuxian is an ancient 1,400-year-old Tang Dynasty village with preserved stone residences, rustic courtyards, and famous countryside cafes (such as the Yangshuo Secret Garden). Pedaling through the back paddies from Jiuxian toward Yulong Bridge is one of the most idyllic experiences in all of southern China.
